Abyss: the desecration money printer

Abyss is the most consistent divine farm in 0.5 and the single most important mechanic for a Lich. This is the full min-max: the exact mechanic, the Well of Souls economy it feeds, the complete Atlas subtree, and the chase uniques. Mechanics and node text are confirmed on poe2db; farming numbers are community reports, flagged as such.

How an Abyss actually works

An Abyss is a pit with fissures branching out. Monsters that spawn near it are weakened by it. Killing those weakened monsters closes the fissures back toward the pit. Once the fissures reach the pit, it activates and spawns a large horde of Abyssal monsters; killing them closes the pit. Each closed pit has a chance to spawn an Abyssal Trove that grants pieces of Preserved Bone (the desecration currency). The final Abyss in an area can instead open an Abyssal Depths dungeon.

The core min-max
The rarity of the Abyssal monsters that emerge copies the rarity of the weakened monsters you killed, and the Abyssal steals their modifiers. A modifier stolen by a Rare Abyssal can be upgraded into an Abyssal Modifier, which rarely upgrades again into a much stronger Lichborn Modifier. So you want Rare monsters dying next to the fissures: pull rares onto the Abyss trail before you kill them, and juice for more rare packs. More Rare Abyssals = more Abyssal / Lichborn mods = more desecrated value.

Each area contains one of three monster groups: the Lightless, the Blackblooded or the Legion of the Pit. This is the in-map flavour, separate from the three desecrated modifier factions (Ulaman / Amanamu / Kurgal) you steer with Omens and the Balance of Power node later. Note: Abyss Omens no longer drop below area level 65, so juice at maps, not in the campaign.

Abyssal Depths & bosses

Found off the final Abyss in an area. Inside, every Rare has an Abyssal Modifier. At the end sits a more powerful Rare with both a Lichborn and an Abyssal Modifier; killing it unlocks nearby chests that drop Preserved Bone and can rarely drop exclusive Omens and Lineage Supports. At higher area levels the Depths lead to boss fights:

  • Tasgul, Swallower of Light and Vandroth, Blackblooded Enslaver (always drop Desecrated Currency since 0.5.3).
  • Igrulog, the Incubator Queen (the “additional Incubator Queen” tablet mod spawns her).
  • Vessel of Kulemak: the Abyss pinnacle at map level 79+. Drops Ancient bones, the ring, and (the per-character Abyssal Lich unlock, now always given to the map owner).

Why it prints: the Well of Souls

Bones are targeted crafting currency. At the Well of Souls (found in Act 2) you desecrate a Rare item (adds one Unrevealed Desecrated modifier; if mods are full, one is removed first), then reveal and pick 1 of 3 options. Desecrated mods are strong and slot-exclusive, so a finished piece sells for a lot: this is where most of the Abyss value actually is.

Bone tiers (live poe2db, corrected 0.5.4)
Ancient

Minimum Modifier Level 40. Highest tier, guarantees a strong roll. The one to chase ( ~2.8 div).

Preserved

No restriction. The neutral workhorse (also the only Cranium / Vertebrae bone for jewels + waystones).

Gnawed

Maximum Item Level 64. Capped, cheap, for low-ilvl or budget desecrates.

Jawbone = weapon / quiver, Rib = armour, Collarbone = amulet / ring / belt, = jewel, Preserved Vertebrae = waystone, = jewellery with a chance for otherworldly (Breach) mods. Full table on /crafting/reference.

Jewel desecration risk
Desecrating a Jewel with a Preserved Cranium is Unstable: each desecrate has an increasing chance to destroy the jewel. Timeless jewels like also become unstable once desecrated. Do not desecrate a jewel you cannot afford to lose.
Steering the roll with Omens
  • : your next Weapon or Jewellery desecrate guarantees a random Ulaman / Amanamu / Kurgal modifier respectively.
  • : reroll the 3 revealed options once.
  • : your next removes only Desecrated modifiers. The safety net for cleaning a bricked desecrate, and one of the highest-value Abyss drops (currently ~7 div).
  • : replaces all mods with up to 6 Unrevealed ones and corrupts the item. Gamble mode.
  • : next desecrate adds only prefixes / only suffixes.
  • Mark of the Abyssal Lord (a special mod): desecrating an item that has it always removes it and replaces it with an Unrevealed Desecrated mod of a higher tier.
Which faction (Lich caster pick)

Amanamu is the Lich / caster faction: Str/Int, its suffixes give +1% to all maximum Resistances and +1-2 to Level of all Minion Skills, plus fire+chaos res, Spirit, and life-cost spell damage prefixes (up to +148-178% Spell Damage with Spells that cost Life). Ulaman leans Str/Dex totems / bleed / projectiles (suffix +1 to Level of all Skills); Kurgal leans Dex/Int mana / arcane surge / energy shield / infusions (suffix +3-5% Quality of all Skills). Full mod pools on /crafting/reference.

The full Abyss Atlas subtree

Exact node text from poe2db. The subtree gates its strongest nodes behind closing the Atlas Abyss cracks: the Northern Abyssal Wounds unlock the reward multipliers, the Southern Abyssal Wounds unlock the Overrun-spread nodes.

Density & pits
  • Lord of the Pit: pits scattered throughout the area; Abyssal monsters gain 10% increased Effectiveness per closed Pit, up to 100%; 20% chance for an extra Abyss. The keystone of the whole farm.
  • From Below: Abysses contain 1 additional Pit. Dark Depths: 30% / 20% / 10% chance for 2 / 3 / 4 additional Pits.
  • Sprawling Rupture: Abysses spawn 25% increased Monsters.
  • Dark Bloodlines (Northern): Abyss Pits and Cracks have 25% chance to spawn all Monsters as at least Magic (better Abyssal rarity).
Reward multipliers
  • Unholy Influence (Northern): 100% increased chance for Abyssal monsters to have Abyssal Modifiers, and 100% for Lichborn Modifiers. The single biggest value node.
  • Armaments of Evil (Northern): Tier 5 Rare equipment dropped by Abyssal monsters has a Desecrated Modifier.
  • Blessing of the Source (Northern): jewels you find have a 5% chance for an additional Desecrated Modifier.
  • Rotting Bones: 25% increased chance to find Ancient Desecrated Currency (the high-tier bones).
  • Ghastly Relics: the large Abyssal chest from the final Pit becomes an Abyssal Strongbox.
  • Depths Chance: +10% chance for Abysses to lead to an Abyssal Depths (small nodes, stack several).
  • Close to the Surface: your Abyss Tablets also grant Abyssal Depths +25% Abyssal / +25% Lichborn modifier chance and +4% Pack Size, and your Waystone explicit mods apply inside the Depths.
Faction control & spread
  • Balance of Power: choose the Abyss faction you always encounter (Amanamu / Kurgal / Ulaman / Any). This is how you force Amanamu for Lich desecrates, not map-hunting.
  • Strange Aversions: factions now give different chests: Ulaman = Currency, Kurgal = Weapons, Amanamu = Armour, Any = Basic + Jewellery. Pick your faction for what you want to farm.
  • Shadow of Undeath (Northern): 50% increased chance for Rogue Exiles and for Essences to be influenced by Abysses (double-dips other mechanics).
  • Stir the Swarm / Endless War (Southern): completing (Overrun) Abysses has a 5% / 50% chance to make a nearby map Overrun by the Abyssal, chaining juiced maps.

Juicing: exact tablet & waystone text

Abyss scaling lives on Abyssal Waystone / tablet modifiers. Exact poe2db lines, ranked for a divine farm. Roll cheap tablets until you hit the top ones and stack them (same-type tablets stack in 0.5). Note: since 0.5.3, chest-quantity mods also raise the chance to find an Abyssal Depths, so item-quantity juice doubles as Depths access.

Abyss Pits in Area always have Rewards. Guarantees a Trove (bones) at every pit. Bone sustain = the whole strategy.

Abyssal Monsters have increased Difficulty and Reward for each closed Pit. Stacks with the Lord of the Pit node. Compounds per pit.

Natural Rare Monsters in Area have 1 extra Abyssal Modifier. Feeds the steal + upgrade loop: more mods to convert to desecrated value.

Area contains (2-3) additional Abysses and Abysses spawn (50-100)% increased Monsters. Raw density and more pits to close.

Abyss Pits have (50-80)% chance to spawn all Monsters as at least Magic. More magic/rare weakened monsters = better Abyssal rarity.

Abysses lead to an Abyssal Depths / Abyssal Boss. Force the dungeon / boss for chest loot and boss Desecrated Currency.

(unique tablet, 1 use): “Map is overrun by the Abyssal, contains (14-18) additional Abysses, 3 additional Rares from Abysses.” The blow-out map. is the standard 10-use Abyss tablet.

Every Abyssal Waystone mod also carries a flat map item-drop-chance and pack-size bonus. Waystone base: run T15 with high pack size / rarity prefixes; community adds a Powerful Map Boss affix and Hilda's Master profile for extra rares.

Abyss chase uniques & sockets

  • (Fine Belt): 2 hidden Augment Sockets and greatly increased effect of socketed Augment items. The Abyss belt (the PoE 1 “Stygian Vise” role).
  • The Gaze Ancient Augments (socket into Darkness Enthroned): Amanamu's Gaze (Spirit / ailment-clear / move speed), Kurgal's Gaze (mana / arcane surge), Ulaman's Gaze, Tecrod's Gaze (life). One Ancient Augment each.
  • (Abyssal Signet ring): inflicts Abyssal Wasting on hit and can gain up to 4 custom Desecrated modifiers. Fully revamped in 0.5.3.
  • (unique Diamond jewel): rolls custom Desecrated prefixes and suffixes.
  • (Ravenous Staff): grants Feast of Flesh, +60-80% Desecrated Modifier magnitudes, plus Lich Desecrated mods. The desecration-Lich weapon.
  • (Timeless Jewel): Passives in radius are Conquered by the Abyssals (Amanamu).
  • Lineage Supports (drop from Depths chests): Amanamu's Tithe, Kurgal's Leash, Tecrod's Revenge, Kulemak's Dominion.

The divine farming loop

~60%
profit from Abyss
City map
4 tablet slots
~240%
Item Rarity (gear)
Jado
Master (anomaly rush)

The headline community meta (Perra, ~150 div/hr raw profit) stacks Abyss + Delirium + Ritual on one map, but the trick is that only Abyss uses your tablet slots. Abyss is ~60% of income; Delirium and Ritual are added for free through other mechanics. It rains hundreds of rares and Omens of Light rather than the old single-omen strategy.

The 150 div/hr execution
  1. Farm a City-biome cluster (mandatory): City maps give a 4th tablet slot, and every tablet is a direct loot multiplier.
  2. Delirium without tablets: drop a Grand Mirror on the location for 200% Delirium. It juices your ground loot (he barely drops raw divines without it), gives splinters and drops Delirium tablets for later. Unlock the Delirium Atlas passives or no splinters drop.
  3. Ritual without tablets: use the Rite of the Nameless chain () and the Foretold Bounty trick to add Rituals plus targeted bounties.
  4. Abyss on the tablets: run (14-18 extra Abysses) plus Abyss tablets rolled for the three priority mods: increased Rare Monster count, +Abyssal Modifier chance, and +2 Rare Monsters per Abyss. Result: hundreds of rares, all with abyssal mods, raining Omens of Light.
  5. Stack rarity everywhere: Monster Rarity (more rares + more mods) and Item Rarity on gear (~240%, which makes maps rippy but is worth it). Anything that does not boost rare monsters or rarity is useless.
  6. Atlas: set every special node to Rare Monsters + Extra Modifiers + Rarity. Take Seeking Shrine (rarity) and the Rogue Exile nodes (Heart of the Well diamonds sell, 5-mod ones for a few divines). Master: Jado to rush anomaly bosses, or Doryani.

The Amanamu Void tech (Omen of Light check)
Kill the Amanamu monsters before they spawn their Void Cloud. Done right, they drop up to five Omens: Putrefaction, the Necromancy ones, Omen of Light and Omen of Abyssal Echoes. Self-check: if you see them dropping Omen of the Liege instead, you did it wrong. Nuke them harder before the Void spawns, or kite them out (walk away until they follow) and kill them clear of the cloud.
