Abyssal Lich
The hidden Witch sub-ascendancy from 0.3 Rise of the Abyssal, core since 0.4. Patch 0.5 Return of the Ancients (launch 2026-05-29) doesn't touch ascendancy nodes and reworks Abyss / Breach in ways that favour Lich's soul-stacker fantasy. 10 documented 0.4 builds (Maxroll, Mobalytics, RaizQT, Deadrabbit, 787prada, PoB Archives) carry forward into 0.5 with minor tuning.

How to unlock Abyssal Lich
Hidden path. Must ascend Lich first. Then 4 steps. Toggle freely between Lich and Abyssal Lich after unlock.
Standard Sekhemas / Chaos trials to allocate Lich ascendancy normally.
Drops from Abyssal bosses (Abyss league mechanic, core since 0.4). In 0.5, Abyssal cracks appear on the Atlas and lead to guaranteed Abyssal Depths with a boss.
Located in Mastodon Badlands (Act 2). A new dialog appears when you carry the invitation.
Boss fight with stacking modifiers each kill. After: choose “Steal a Lich's Power”. Urn appears reading “Embrace Abyssal Power?” → toggle between Lich and Abyssal Lich freely.
Abyssal Lich is unlocked per character, not account-wide. Each new league (Runes of Aldur 0.5, then 0.6, etc.) means a new Witch on the temp realm and the 4 steps above need to be redone. The character from the previous league stays in its realm and eventually migrates to Standard. In practice fast :Abyss spawns aggressively in early maps T1-T5, so Kulemak's Invitation drops within hours of mapping.
The core ascendancy rewrites
Abyssal Lich replaces specific base Lich passives. The four that drive every build below:
Skeletal minions you would summon instead grant you Umbral Souls. Each soul type (Warrior / Sniper / Arsonist) provides a different stat bonus to you. Stop being a Necromancer, become a soul-stacker.
Consumes a Power Charge to summon an Abyssal Apparition that repeats your last cast spell. Effectively grants Spell Echo to every spell. Multiple charges = multiple apparitions.
Offerings target enemies in cull range. You receive the Offering buff, with +1% effect per “Power” of the culled enemy. Bone / Flesh Offering become offensive cooldowns.
Adds a jewel socket with +100% effect of socketed jewels. Over-tune one stat (proj speed, AoE, crit) via a single perfect jewel.
Supporting passives : Soulless Form, Eternal Life, Eldritch Empowerment, Rupture the Flesh, Incessant Cacophony.
Ascendancy pick order (4 trials)
Same 4 picks as base Lich. The Abyssal Lich toggle (unlocked via Vessel of Kulemak, see below) swaps node effects without changing which slots you allocate. The standard + / Plants order:
Non-channelling spells deal 30% more damage for 5% current ES sacrificed per cast. Free 30% more after ES regen.
No inherent Mana Regeneration, instead regen 6% of maximum Life per second as Mana, and 10% of Damage bypasses ES. Net mana gain : base caster regen is ~1-2% of Mana/s, so 6% of Life/s is much higher in practice. The 10% bypass becomes Eternal Life's entry point.
Life cannot change while you have Energy Shield. Single most powerful defensive node. Hardcore-king pillar.
+1 jewel socket with 100% increased effect. Slot one over-tuned jewel : Withered Effect (Plants), Proj Speed (Twister / Spiral Volley), AoE (Whirling Assault), Cleric ES (Wyvern Boneshatter).
The same 4 slots remain. Effects transform : Rupture the Soul → Rupture the Flesh (chaos explode → physical explode, enabling Plants / Wyvern physical scaling). Necromantic Conduit → Umbral Well (skeletal minions → Umbral Souls feeding you). Eldritch Empowerment / Soulless Form / Eternal Life / Crystalline Phylactery stay identical. You can toggle freely once the Vessel of Kulemak is killed.
Umbral Souls math (the build engine)
Umbral Well replaces each skeletal minion summon with a buff. The buff type depends on which Skeletal minion you would have summoned. Stacks. Multiple types can be active at once. This is the math every Abyssal Lich build is solving.

Tech nugget : . Converts +Projectile Speed into +Projectile Damage without removing the speed. You get both. Every Skeletal Sniper Umbral Soul = +21% Projectile Speed after the 1.4× multiplier from Proj Acceleration III. This is what makes the Twister/Spiral Volley builds tier-S.
Ten build variants documented in 0.4
Each row = a distinct build documented under 0.4, with at least one published guide or PoB. S-tier = explicitly tagged top meta by community. Tier A = solid, may need optimisation. Tier B = experimental. All ten predate 0.5: check the Patch 0.5 section below (ES recovery nerf, 40 000 leech cap) before committing.

Skeletal Arsonist Umbral Souls scale AoE; becomes screen-wide. AoEAH writeup listed AOE Stacker among the top Witch builds of 0.4. Hybrid melee-caster route.
as central support. Only Abyssal Lich gets the Skeletal Sniper Umbral Soul that enables this proj-speed scaling. (Mobalytics community) and (787prada) are the two main carrier-skill variants.
Crit → → Steward of Kulemak echoes the Comet = 2 Comets per crit. Full-screen AoE Comet rain. Borrows Sorceress meta tech into the Witch tree. 0.5 watchout: the 40 000 leech cap hits big single-hit leech carriers like this one (see patch section below).
Maxroll publishes vetted PoB-style exports without full guide text. 'Inhibitor' (level 91) + 'Efficiency II' (level 79). Useful for direct PoB import to compare tree allocation against your own.
No single creator. poe.ninja tracks Abyssal Liches running (fire pop), (chaos), (lightning) as carrier spells. Steward of Kulemak echoes the spell. Less crystallised than the meta variants above but offers experimentation routes.
Melee-caster hybrid. Rend Wyvern screen-wide clear via Tribal Fury melee splash. + Dance with Death + Flanged Mace for movement. Skeletal Cleric Umbral Soul = 7,200+ ES/second. Chaos Inoculation for full ES build. Crystalline Phylactery jewel socket.
Wyvern variant that self-ignites for damage scaling. Skadoosh's spin on 787prada's framework, but uses ignite as the multiplier instead of pure melee scaling. Glass cannon profile.
GGG-featured Build of the Week (0.3). Crossbow Abyssal Lich running + WITHOUT Last Lament. Unconventional weapon choice for the ascendancy. Community kept it running in 0.4 with adjustments (0.4 data, re-verify in 0.5).

How it plays
Cast / similar to gen Power Charges. Each cast triggers Steward of Kulemak apparition = repeat spell. Skeletal minions = Umbral Souls feeding YOU (not them). You don't command an army, you consume it.
Unwilling Offering makes target enemies in cull range. They become offensive cooldowns instead of buffs. Cull-execute then absorb the bonus yourself.
Dense packs where you generate Power Charges + Souls fast. Abyss / Breach feed both. Boss rooms are fine because apparitions repeat your nuke.
Empty rooms / single-target with no adds. Power Charge sustain dies. Pre-charge before walking into a Citadel boss.
Atlas tree & content priorities
Abyss is the natural pairing · drops Breach Rings + Heart of the Well jewel + Abyssal Eyes + Lineage Supports + Kulemak's Invitation. Breach is the secondary because it shares the dense-wave pattern. Maxroll, AKRPG and Mobalytics converge on this. Node and wheel names below are 0.4 data: the 0.5 Atlas was rebuilt with 300+ nodes, so re-trace the exact nodes before committing (see patch section).
Drops Breach Rings + all Abyssal exclusives. From Out of the Pit node = +25% Abyssal monster effectiveness. Stack all major Abyss nodes for spawn rate + bonuses.
Secondary. Dense waves pair with Steward of Kulemak apparition spam. Drops Breach Rings (your endgame craft base).
AOEAH / dpsvip 0.4 recommendation: skip both unless you have spare points, Breach + Abyss gave better Divine/hour for Abyssal Lich. Re-verify on the rebuilt 0.5 Atlas.

Pinnacle content & exclusive drops
Four encounters tied to the Abyss-Lich path, increasing difficulty. Each rewards exclusive items.
Spawns at the end of regular Abyss encounters. Fissures lead to pits; closing all fissures opens the main pit. Rare monsters get Abyssal Modifiers (deadlier + better rewards).
Random reveal after Abyss completion. Horde encounters in an Abyssal City. Rare enemies become Lichborn (extra modifier) and are nearly guaranteed Abyssal Omen drops.
Each Twisted Domain is ruled by one of 4 Abyssal Commanders. Pinnacle league mechanic encounters. Drop powerful uniques + sometimes Kulemak's Invitation (the access item for the final pinnacle).
Well of Souls fight. Multi-phase encounter separated by crafting : between phases you pick groups of modifiers to apply to a special ring called the Grip of Kulemak (revamped in 0.5.3 : up to 13 mods possible). This is both your ascendancy unlock AND a recurring craft loop endgame.
Build-relevant exclusive drops
Build-defining for Plants / Wyvern variants. Drops from Lichborn Rogue Exiles in Twisted Domain.
Socketable belt. Body armour socket variant is the rarest and most valuable.
Rewrites passive nodes near socket with Abyssal-themed alternatives scaling on Tribute.
New socketable type, only in Abyssal Depths. One per socket, powerful effects.
New gem category. Minion-mechanic enhancer that's relevant since you use minion summons as Umbral Soul fuel.
Special ring you craft mid-Vessel-of-Kulemak fight by picking modifier groups. Revamped in 0.5.3 : the ring can now carry up to 13 mods. Repeat the fight for re-rolls.
Omen of Abyssal Echoes (reroll mods), Omen of Light (remove unwanted), Omen of Sinistral/Dextral Necromancy (force prefix/suffix), Omen of Sovereign/Blackblooded/Liege (type-specific). Compensates for the 0.4 Homogenising Exaltation removal.
Map mods to dodge
Cripples Skeletal Cleric ES/s regen (Wyvern variant's 7.2k+ ES/s sustain). Reroll for Plants/Wyvern.
Bad for / Steward of Kulemak curse-based variants.
Universal caster killer. Always reroll.
Manageable if you run Chaos Inoculation (Wyvern variant). Lethal if you don't cap chaos res.
Run Abyss in Cleanse / Swamp / Water biomes. Activate “Local Knowledge” atlas node ONLY for swamp/water (else it reduces currency drops in other biomes).
Endgame craft · Breach Ring
Drops from Clasped Hands / Twisted Domain (Breach mechanic only). 40-50% quality cap (vs 20% normal) = 2× catalyst effect on every stat.
Craft : Magic Breach Ring iLvl 84+ → Catalysts to 40%+ quality (Adaptive for casters, Reaver for Wyvern attack) → Essence start → Exalts. ~5-10 Divines self vs 30-40 Div trade.

Verdict : Abyssal Lich is favoured for Return of the Ancients.Zero ascendancy nerfs and the Abyss / Breach mechanics that fuel the build both received major reworks that lean into Lich's strengths.
