Pick a build for patch 0.5
Patch 0.5 Return of the Ancients launches 2026-05-29. The picks below are ordered by 0.5 viability after the leech cap, ES recovery, and mana sustain nerfs. Lich ED Contagion is the safest starter ; Stormweaver / Blood Mage remain playable but harder.
Lich · ED Contagion (0.5 starter)
Chaos DoT Witch. Confirmed S-tier 0.5 league starter : zero direct nerfs, chaos sidesteps the new ES recovery cuts and the 40 000 leech cap. ED + Contagion + Despair + Dark Effigy. Self-found friendly, HC viable. Upgrades into Abyssal Lich once you start mapping.
Plants Abyssal Lich (0.5 endgame)
Hidden Witch sub-ascendancy unlocked by Vessel of Kulemak (Act 2 Mastodon Badlands). Deadrabbit's Plants build : Entangle + Thrashing Vines + Thunderstorm trigger Overgrown Plant explosions via Accelerated Growth. Three damage layers per cast, HC viable.
Spark Stormweaver
Lightning projectiles. Mana-as-resource via Archmage. A long-standing meta caster. The 0.5 patch notes list no direct Stormweaver, Spark, or Arcane Surge nerf ; only the global ES recovery nerfs touch it, and 0.5.1 buffed casters. Likely holds A.
Blood Mage
Life-as-resource crit caster. 0.5 leech cap 40 000 / hit breaks the Spark CoC Comet variant : Vitality Siphon was buffed to 20% but doesn't close the gap. Pivot to multi-hit carriers. Tier shifts A → B until a new variant settles.
All four run a wand / staff / sceptre + focus or shield and share most gear targets (life, ES, resistances, +Skill levels, mana). The deep-dives split where they diverge.
5 things to do early
Open a build guide before your first passive point. The tree is 1500+ nodes. Respec is paid in gold. Don't freestyle.
Cut both your Uncut Skill Gem AND your Uncut Spirit Gem. Most beginners forget the Spirit one and play at 60% power for ten hours. How gems work →

Check the Caster Vendor at every level-up. She sells res rings cheap. Most players never open her menu.
Aim 30% resistance through the campaign, not 75%. Cap when you reach the Atlas, not before. Resistances 101 →
Common pitfalls
Skipping Ascendancy trials. 8 points = ~25% power per pair. Sekhemas opens Act 2, Chaos opens Act 3. Not optional.
Vaal Orbing finished gear. Irreversible. 3 of 4 outcomes are bad. Vaal disposables or whites only.
Slamming Exalts on low-ilvl bases. T1 mods need ilvl 78-82. An Exalt on ilvl 50 caps at tier 4+. Check ilvl with Alt before any high-value craft.
Bringing PoE 1 muscle memory.Quality doesn't boost tier rolls. Chaos doesn't bypass ES (2× hit). Spell Suppression doesn't exist. No Scour Orbs. Vendor recipes mostly gone (Salvage Bench replaces). Trust the in-game tooltip.
